Spanish 1.5 with Dave Haffman
Spanish 1.5 is a half level above the regular first year Spanish class, reserved for the students who have taken Spanish in the past. We are learning conjugates, root words, stem changers, among other things.
Children's Story
For Spanish we had to write a children's story we could read to a group of children over at Needham Elementary. We spent over a month researching and developing our stories and drawings for the books we would be reading, each on a different Spanish speaking town and/or region.
My story was based on a girl living in Ica, Peru. She has a job at an oasis called Huacachina 5km from her home. She hears legends about a mermaid that lives in the oasis and visits witches in another famous suburb called Cachiche. The artwork was inspired off of a show called Adventure Time, and was colored with watercolor pencils. This was something I wish I had worked on more, because it wasn't as refined as it could have been. During the exhibition at Needham Elementary we were able to read our stories to several children. The kids were friendly and were willing to listen to our stories. It will be something that I will not forget for a long while. |

Arte y Lengua
In this project we had to study a spanish or hispanic artist and create a piece of art based on your mentors style. The art pieces ranged from abstract paintings and portraits, to sculptures and intricate architecture. Some students chose to do architecture designs on 3-d programs or Minecraft, some painted, some sculpted, but it all came down to how beautifully crafted everyones piece of art came down to. To go with the the pieces of work, we had to write a three paragraph paper explaining who our artist was, what they did, what their art looked like, and about what inspired the piece of art we created.
Click here to see my paper I was able to understand how to use the past and imperfect tenses more efficiently than i have been able to, but I was also able to see some beautiful artwork in the process. i had never heard of Jorge Camarena Gonzalez before this project, but once I saw his work I knew from the start that I wanted to learn more about him and why he painted the things he did. I had learned in my process that Camarena had been an understudy for a plastic surgeon for a few years, but his mentor told him to start a path in the field of art, due to his incredible artistic abilities as a sculptor and a painter/muralist. Because of his painting style, it was a little difficult to find a piece of art that was not cubist. However, I stumbled upon a couple of portraits of a woman with long black braids and I decided that since it was a less common thing for him to do, that I would inspire my art on that. My piece came out beautifully, and I am proud that I was able to mimic it almost exactly in my own style. However, I feel like there could have been a more refined aspect of my art piece. I am not used to working with acrylic, but I know that if I am careful enough then I can work in great details and refine my lines. And that is something I did not do, because of a few time and canvas issues. And although I am challenged a little bit with acrylics, I had an easier time working with those, than I did with writing my paper. Since I know how to properly conjugate and form sentences, that part came off as a breeze. However, finding the proper words to go into my sentence is not my strong point, I found myself looking at Wordreference more often than I should have and was struggling to remember some basic vocabulary. So this shows how I have a more difficult time remembering vocabulary words, and where to place them in conjunction to others in a sentence. |
Arte y Lengua
For this project, we were asked to translate a recipe from a Spanish speaking country and write an ode to go along with it. The reason we are required to do odes is due to the famous poet, Pablo Neruda, who wrote poems, mainly odes, to certain ingredients that were commonly found. While the recipe helped develop our translating, writing, and reading skills.
The project itself was a little rushed. We barely had anytime writing our odes and testing our dishes/recipes. Most of the time we had lessons, and were forced to work on everything at home. But otherwise it was a fun experience learning how to cook a dish i have never made before, and writing poetry, a skill of mine, in a different language.
